West Boca resident sues PBSO after detaining teen with gun during doorstep prank

A West Boca man filed a federal lawsuit against the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office after he was arrested overnight on Oct. 16, 2025, following an incident in which he detained a 14-year-old at gunpoint near his home. Deputies arrested the man and booked him on a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm; prosecutors later declined to file charges, saying evidence was insufficient to support prosecution.

Body-worn camera and home-surveillance footage made part of the public record show three teenage boys approaching the residence shortly before 8 p.m.; two knocked on the front door while a third stood in the yard. Surveillance shows one boy later returning from the backyard to the front door with what appeared to be a flashlight. The homeowner returned, called 911 reporting suspected burglaries, retrieved a handgun, and ordered the juvenile to the ground while speaking with a dispatcher until deputies arrived.

Records indicate the dispatcher asked whether the gun was being pointed at the boy; the homeowner said he kept it pointed at the ground. A responding deputy placed the man in handcuffs at the scene. Prosecutors later wrote that, although probable cause existed for an arrest, the evidence could not prove all legal elements required for criminal charges.

In an August federal complaint the man alleges the probable-cause affidavit omitted or misrepresented exculpatory facts known to deputies at the time, and names the Sheriff’s Office and five deputies as defendants. The Sheriff’s Office has not filed a response in the lawsuit and did not provide comment on pending litigation.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
