Detective describes interview, evidence collection in Miami death-penalty trial
A Miami man is facing a death-penalty trial in connection with the deaths of his estranged wife and her two daughters, and a lead homicide detective described his initial contact with the defendant during testimony. Detective Juan Chaidez of the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office testified as the sole witness during the day’s proceedings, outlining investigators’ early steps. Chaidez said deputies issued a flyer seeking the defendant before he came to speak with detectives. During the interview, the defendant acknowledged his estranged wife was seeing other men and, according to the detective, told investigators he "forgave her and he understood how she felt" about that. When prosecutors asked whether the defendant showed emotion discussing the stepdaughters, Chaidez testified the defendant showed "Not at all." Jurors were shown photographs of the defendant from the day he spoke with precinct detectives. Chaidez also recounted items and forensic steps: officers documented the clothing the girls were wearing when found, collected those items, and obtained a DNA sample from the defendant before releasing him. Investigators later secured phone and toll records as part of the ongoing probe. The trial is ongoing; the court was told testimony will resume Friday when the medical examiner who performed the autopsies is expected to appear. The details above reflect testimony presented in open court and identified investigative actions by the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office. All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Federal complaint alleges Miami-Dade corrections officer ran jail substance-smuggling and gambling operation
A Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation officer is facing federal charges after FBI agents say he participated in an organization that smuggled synthetic-cannabinoid-laced paper into county jail facilities and ran gambling operations for incarcerated bettors. Authorities identified the officer as Renel Troutman, age 24, and allege he was one of several compromised correctional employees who helped acquire, transport, introduce and conceal contraband within MDCR institutions. According to the federal criminal complaint, investigators tied Troutman through text messages and electronic payment records to an outside organizer who coordinated narcotics quantities, deliveries, pricing, wagers and payments. The complaint describes messages referencing “papers” and “sheets” that investigators say were laboratory-confirmed as synthetic-cannabinoid-laced paper in seizures on Feb. 26, 2025 and Aug. 7, 2025. Investigators also allege messages discussed concealing shipments, and referenced betting activity and outstanding inmate gambling balances. Agents executed a search warrant at Troutman’s home and took him into custody; prosecutors say he admitted knowing the organizer through an inmate and acknowledged an operational role in the Enterprise’s gambling activity. The complaint alleges he attempted to minimize his role regarding narcotics but was confronted with messages about physical preparation and sizing of the “papers.” Troutman faces federal counts including conspiracy to possess contr substance with intent to distribute, Hobbs Act extortion under color of official right, conspiracy, and racketeering promotion. MDCR confirmed his arrest and says he has been relieved of duty pending the investigation, which remains under active FBI and administrative review and is being prosecuted in federal court.
Rapper arrested after woman alleges assault at Star Island residence in Miami Beach
Miami Beach police arrested rapper William Leonard Roberts II — known professionally as Rick Ross — after a woman reported an alleged domestic violence incident at his Star Island residence, according to the arrest affidavit. The alleged incident occurred on Aug. 28 and was reported to police on Sept. 29; Roberts voluntarily surrendered to detectives and was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at 6:10 a.m. following his arrest. According to the affidavit summarized by police, the woman said the two were in a relationship and living together when the incident began after she was awakened that morning. The affidavit details allegations that Roberts struck the woman multiple times, grabbed and twisted her hoodie collar in a manner that restricted her breathing, pulled her by the ponytail and struck her in the face, and attempted to spray her with a shower head before she left the residence. The woman provided a sworn statement, timestamped photographs of injuries, and investigators reviewed surveillance video related to the residence. Miami Beach police charged Roberts with one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery. In Miami-Dade bond court, Judge Mindy Glazer found probable cause; bond was set at $4,000 for the strangulation charge and $1,000 for the misdemeanor battery, and Roberts posted bond and was released. The judge issued a stay-away order regarding the alleged victim and ordered surrender of firearms; an arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 22. Allegations in the arrest affidavit are reported by police; the charges are pending in Miami-Dade courts and have not been proven at trial. All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
