Three Sentenced After South Columbus Altercation Left Man Dead

Three men were sentenced in connection with a December 2023 fight in south Columbus that left a 53-year-old man dead. The altercation began inside a business on South High Street on the evening of Dec. 6, 2023, when staff asked the group to leave. Outside the business, Columbus police say the men became involved in a physical confrontation with another patron, identified in court records as a 53-year-old man.
According to court records, after the fight the three men left the scene in a red vehicle and the injured man was found in the parking lot by medics. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and died five days after the incident. The three defendants — ages 22, 21 and 19 at the time of initial charging — were originally booked on murder charges in December 2023 and later entered guilty pleas to lesser counts.
The defendants pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony, and felonious assault, a second-degree felony, per court records. Each was sentenced to prison terms ranging from 19 to 24 1/2 years. Columbus police are the investigating agency attributed in the public record for the sequence of events outside the business.
The report distinguishes allegations and charged conduct from adjudicated outcomes: the court-recorded pleas and sentences are documented facts; descriptions of the fight and actions taken at the scene are based on the investigating agency’s account and the charging documents filed in court.
