Teen fatally shot at gated Tampa community after attempt to recover phone, police say
A fatal shooting occurred in Tampa after a 15-year-old boy was shot during an encounter at a private residence in a gated community on September 20, 2026. Tampa Police say the male juvenile was found critically injured by officers at the scene and later died there.
According to the department’s reconstructed timeline, the teen had lost a cell phone earlier that day and, with two friends, used a tracking app that indicated the device was in the area of River Willow Place. The group entered the gated community through an open gate and temporarily left their vehicle in the roadway. After being asked to move the truck, they went door-to-door looking for the phone and, when unanswered at one residence, proceeded to the backyard and an enclosed back patio where they knocked and banged on a sliding glass door.
Investigators report the adult resident encountered the group on his private patio, put on a mask, and armed himself. Tampa Police say a physical altercation occurred as others fled; the resident later stated he was placed in a headlock and fired a single shot. Evidence collected included the firearm and other scene information; investigators also confirmed the teen’s phone was not inside the residence and remained missing.
The Tampa Police Department presented its findings to the State Attorney’s Office, which reviewed the case and declined to file criminal charges, concluding the available facts would not overcome a stated claim of self-defense under Florida law. The resident cooperated with investigators and the firearm was secured as evidence; the case is closed administratively with no charges filed by the State Attorney’s Office.
