Swimmer Pulled From Rip Current Off Boynton Beach as High Surf Batters Palm Beach County
A swimmer caught in a powerful rip current roughly 300 yards offshore of Boynton Beach was pulled to safety Saturday as high surf battered the Palm Beach County coastline. Video from the scene shows Boynton Beach Fire Rescue crews running through heavy surf to reach the person, pulling them aboard a rescue jet ski and returning them safely through the inlet.
The incident occurred amid a broad period of dangerous surf and large breaking waves driven by swells moving down the Atlantic coast from a nor’easter. The National Weather Service warned of dangerous surf and rip currents along the coast and forecast breaking waves in the 6- to 8-foot range. The NWS also advised that rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore and urged inexperienced swimmers to remain out of the water.
Emergency responders executed a maritime rescue using a jet ski to retrieve the swimmer and transport them back to shore through the inlet. The rescue footage and agency response show a coordinated in-water extraction rather than an extended search. The National Weather Service’s warnings and the documented sea state contextualize why the rescue was necessary.
High water from the same swell produced flooding on Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach, notable beach erosion in sections of the county coastline, and closure of the Lake Worth Beach Pier for the weekend. The NWS indicated dangerous surf and rip currents were expected to continue through Sunday evening; the swimmer was recovered at the scene and no additional case status was reported in the supplied material.
