Suspect arrested in northwest Miami-Dade hit-and-run that died 10-year-old rider

A man surrendered to Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office detectives and was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash on Sept. 9 in northwest Miami-Dade that died a 10-year-old girl and critically injured her 15-year-old brother. The sheriff's office report says the collision occurred at about 8:53 p.m. when a northbound sedan made a left turn and struck the two chldren riding an electric motorcycle through the intersection. According to the arrest affidavit, the driver fled the scene without rendering aid. Surveillance video obtained by detectives reportedly shows the vehicle stopping briefly a short distance away while the driver exited, inspected passenger-side damage, then re-entered the car and drove off. Investigators recovered vehicle parts at the crash scene that they say matched the suspect's car. Detectives allege they linked the vehicle to Arick Metayer, 33, through the recovered parts and phone records that placed him at a salvage yard the day after the crash and on a Brightline train within roughly 24 hours of the collision. A witness who accompanied the suspect to the salvage yard allegedly told detectives the suspect admitted involvement after the witness saw the vehicle damage. The affidavit quotes the witness and the suspect in separate exchanges, including the suspect saying, "I know. I'm going to hire an attorney." Metayer surrendered to detectives, is jailed at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, and faces three felony counts: leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, and tampering with physical evidence. The victims were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center; the girl died the next morning, per the report. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office is listed as the investigating agency and the case is awaiting trial dates documented in the arrest report. All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
