Student carjacked at UNC Charlotte parking lot; suspect charged

Police in Charlotte say an 18-year-old was accused of robbing a UNC Charlotte student at gunpoint in a campus parking lot on Sept. 12 and stealing the victim’s vehicle. Investigators identified and charged the suspect after reviewing campus cameras and other security technology, the university said.
According to authorities, the incident on Sept. 12 led to three felony charges: robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony larceny of a motor vehicle and attempted felony larceny. University officials told investigators that campus video and security systems provided information that helped identify the person now charged.
The suspect was reported to have been in custody since Sept. 17 for incidents the university described as unrelated. Media accounts also say that four days after the campus carjacking, an 18-year-old with the same name was arrested following another carjacking in north Charlotte that culminated in a roughly 90-mile pursuit into South Carolina; sources are working to confirm whether the two cases involve the same individual.
At this time, the charging information and university release are the documented public facts. Law enforcement has filed the listed charges; further case status, court dates or additional investigative conclusions were not provided in the release.
