South Florida mayors ask state to delay removal of license-plate readers

Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner led a Sept. 1 letter urging Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Transportation to pause enforcement of a 30-day deadline that would require automated license-plate readers on state roads to be removed. The letter — which Meiner said several other mayors have since joined — asks for a pause while officials consult affected municipalities and develop a transition plan. Signatures in the version shared include the mayors of Bay Harbor Islands, Bal Harbour Village, Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach, Golden Beach and Indian Creek Village. The mayors request a process for local law enforcement to seek continued use under enhanced state oversight, audits, data-governance standards and a municipal role in any statewide regulations, while acknowledging privacy and data-access concerns.
