Six Arrested in $5.8 Million Scheme Targeting Miami-Dade Condos and HOAs
Six individuals have been arrested in connection with a multimillion-dollar scheme targeting condominium and homeowners' associations across Miami-Dade County. The investigation, Operation Sundown, centers on 60-year-old Juan Awais, described as the alleged ringleader. Investigators allege Awais and his accomplices used their control of the associations to divert money intended for legitimate community expenses, such as roofing, collections, security, landscaping, and general renovations. Instead, the group used falsified invoices and documents to transfer cash into personal bank accounts. Residents of affected properties, including Baltazar Martin at Los Sueños Condominiums, have reported unfinished projects and repairs, calling for justice. The alleged scheme primarily involved properties in Hialeah. All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
