Second-alarm house fire in Northwest Miami-Dade sends elderly resident to hospital

A house fire in Northwest Miami-Dade left an elderly man trapped and hospitalized after firefighters evacuated him from a bedroom at a single-family residence near Northwest 101st Street and 35th Avenue. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units were dispatched to the scene in the early morning after residents reported smoke and flames inside the home. According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, crews arrived after the family reported the blaze and were told an elderly relative remained inside. Fifteen MDFR units responded and declared a second-alarm fire; video captured shortly before crews arrived showed visible flames and heavy gray smoke. Firefighters worked to evacuate occupants, conduct interior searches and attack the blaze from multiple points. Fire officials say the elder resident was removed from a bedroom by firefighters and taken to an area hospital; MDFR described him as stable, and the extent of his injuries has not been documented publicly. Crews reported the fire originated in the home’s garage and that it took roughly two hours to knock down the flames. Significant soot and smoke damage was noted on the roof and front of the house, and the immediate block near 35th Avenue was taped off and closed to traffic while units remained on scene. The cause of the garage fire remains under investigation by fire-rescue authorities. Agencies on scene contained the blaze to its area of origin and worked to prevent extension to other parts of the residence; no final determination on cause or contributing factors has been released.
