School board adopts tentative spending plan, sets lowest millage in years
Monroe County School Board members approved a proposed spending plan and a millage rate during an Aug. 25 meeting at Coral Shores, according to Florida Keys Weekly. Board action set a tentative budget for fiscal year 2026-27 while establishing the millage rate that will be used to calculate property tax obligations for the coming year. The board approved a proposed budget that represents a 3.8% increase compared with the current year. Officials discussed the plan during the public meeting before taking the vote. At the same meeting the board set a millage rate that dropped to its lowest level in more than a decade, a point emphasized in reporting on the meeting. The report did not provide a detailed breakdown of every line item in the proposed spending plan, but it noted that the proposed budget as a whole will increase by the stated percentage. Next steps include the required public-notice period and final budget adoption later in the budget cycle, during which figures can be adjusted before the board adopts the final millage and spending plan for 2026-27, Florida Keys Weekly reported.
