Raleigh resident says GPS showed stolen wallet’s location; police cite limits to tracker data

A Raleigh woman reported her car was taken on Sept. 23 and said the thief left the vehicle but kept her wallet and keys. She told police she could see live GPS data from a tracker in the wallet that showed the device at an address in Durham.
The victim provided that tracking information to Raleigh Police, who say they evaluate the reliability and specificity of location data before acting and coordinate with other jurisdictions when activity crosses city lines. The woman said Durham officers told Raleigh the tracker pointed to a multi-unit address and was not precise enough to identify which unit.
Raleigh Police acknowledged they are the lead agency for this investigation and must determine appropriate investigative and legal steps when real-time device data is presented. Durham Police had not responded to inquiries by the time the report published.
The case remains under investigation; agencies say follow-up depends on evidentiary value and interagency coordination.
