Pepper spray released in Miramar classroom; 26 students triaged, no hospital transports

Broward County, Florida — A student dispersed pepper spray inside a classroom at Glades Middle School in Miramar, resulting in 26 students being triaged Wednesday, according to Miramar Fire Rescue and Broward County Public Schools officials.

Crews were summoned at approximately 11:15 a.m. after a report of a “sick individual,” and firefighters found a group of children affected by the airborne agent. Miramar Fire Rescue upgraded the response to a mass-casualty incident and evaluated students and staff as a precaution.

Fire rescue reported 26 students were triaged; one student received treatment at the scene and no children were transported to a hospital. Miramar police said several students experienced minor coughing and were evaluated on site.

School officials cleared the affected area immediately and relocated the students and staff to another classroom for the remainder of the day, the district said. Broward County Public Schools reported the student responsible is receiving “appropriate disciplinary consequences.”

Miramar police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the release of the pepper spray and said there was no ongoing threat to the school community. Current status: students remained on campus in a different classroom after the response, the incident was under investigation by Miramar police, and medical responders had concluded no hospital transports were necessary.

No additional details were released.
