Multi-vehicle collision in Doral sends two people to hospital; busy intersection closed
A violent five-vehicle crash in Doral left two people hospitalized and prompted closure of a major intersection after first responders arrived Friday morning. Doral Police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units went to the intersection of Northwest 36th Street and 87th Avenue after reports of a multi-car wreck involving a red GMC pickup and four other vehicles. Investigators say the driver of the red GMC experienced a medical emergency involving their heart, lost control, and drove through the intersection, striking a white car. Three additional vehicles that were behind the white car subsequently collided with one another. The GMC ended up turned opposite traffic and on top of the white car. Rescue crews used the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver of the white car; that person was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital and listed in unknown condition in reports. Paramedics examined six patients at the scene; four were reported as being OK. The GMC driver was treated for the heart issue and taken to an area hospital by ambulance. Officers closed the intersection while emergency operations were underway; southbound traffic on Northwest 87th Avenue and westbound traffic on 36th Street were restricted and motorists were advised to seek alternate routes. The investigation and damage assessment remained with Doral Police and responding Miami-Dade units.
