Motorcyclist arrested after two-bike crash near Sarasota bayfront

A two-motorcycle collision occurred near the downtown Sarasota bayfront at the intersection of Bayfront Drive and Gulfstream Avenue on Sunday afternoon. According to the Sarasota Police Department, the crash happened around 4 p.m.; one motorcycle struck another, and the operator of the striking bike abandoned their damaged vehicle and left the scene. Officers later took that motorcyclist into custody.

City police investigators say the sequence began when one motorcycle collided with a second motorcycle at the intersection. The Sarasota Police Department reports that the rider who allegedly caused the collision left the scene after abandoning their motorcycle. Northbound traffic in the area was rerouted as officers conducted an on-scene investigation, and authorities warned motorists to expect delays and use alternate routes.

The Sarasota Police Department is treating the departure from the scene as an allegation tied to the person taken into custody; investigators have stated the collision and the abandonment of the damaged motorcycle as their preliminary findings. Police also indicated additional information would be released as it becomes available.

At the time of the report the department continued its investigation on scene and had not released further details about charges, injuries, or the status of the other motorcyclist. Traffic diversions remained in place while investigators processed the collision site.
