Monroe County recognizes 25 years of service by fire rescue lieutenant
Monroe County officials and the local fire rescue department held a recognition for Lieutenant Manuel “Manny” Leon honoring a quarter-century of service to the Florida Keys. The ceremony was led by Monroe County Commissioners in conjunction with Monroe County Fire Rescue. The recognition highlighted Leon’s long-term commitment to public safety and his role within the department. Leon began his career in the region as a volunteer with the Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department in 1997. After completing training to become an emergency medical technician, he moved into a career position with Monroe County Fire Rescue and advanced to the rank of lieutenant. His service spans emergency response, emergency medical care, and the community-based work typical of fire rescue personnel in the Keys. Department leaders credited his experience with contributing to operational readiness and institutional knowledge. The recognition underscores the importance of retention and experience within local emergency services. Officials said career progression from volunteer roles through professional certification remains a common pathway into Monroe County Fire Rescue. Florida Keys Weekly reported on the recognition and provided details about Leon’s career milestones. County and department spokespersons encouraged residents to remain engaged with local preparedness efforts. Residents are reminded to follow basic fire and life-safety guidance from Monroe County Fire Rescue: maintain working smoke detectors, have an evacuation plan, and consider training in CPR or basic first aid. The department will continue routine operations and community outreach as it builds on the experience of long-serving personnel.
