Miami International lacks FAA-approved arresting beds after cargo jet overran runway
A Boeing 767 cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport about 2 p.m. Sunday and traveled across a road into a nearby parking area, striking several vehicles, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said. Miami International does not have Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) beds at runway ends; FAA guidance allows airports with a 1,000-foot runway safety area in lieu of EMAS, and MIA meets that requirement. The FAA has credited EMAS with preventing aircraft from leaving airport property in other incidents, and pilots have said the crushable material can stop overrunning aircraft; investigators noted the approach appeared unstable. Authorities continue incident response and investigation; no criminal charges were reported in initial statements. All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
