Man died on I-75 shoulder in North Port after chain-reaction crash; investigation ongoing
A 40-year-old man died after being struck on the shoulder of I-75 in North Port on September 16. According to investigators, he had stopped on the interstate following an earlier collision and was then hit by another vehicle while stopped on the roadway shoulder.
The Florida Highway Patrol and North Port police responded to the crash. Police say that while officers were at the scene an additional collision occurred when another driver crashed into a North Port police vehicle; dashcam video captured that secondary crash. The Highway Patrol has stated the collisions remain under investigation and that charges are pending.
The man has been identified in public reporting as Ian Cain; family members have described him as a husband and father. Agency statements attribute the sequence of events—initial crash, stopping on the shoulder, and subsequent striking—to investigators. The involvement of multiple vehicles and a police cruiser at the scene has been confirmed by law enforcement sources.
Authorities have referenced Florida’s Move Over law in public comments about the incident; law enforcement agencies emphasize the hazards emergency personnel and motorists face when stopped on busy roadways. At this time the Florida Highway Patrol lists the matter as an active investigation with potential charges pending, and no adjudicated outcomes are documented in agency reports.
