Lake Worth Beach Pier Closed Through Weekend Due to Hazardous Surf

City officials in Lake Worth Beach closed the Lake Worth Beach Pier beginning Friday because of hazardous wave conditions. The closure is expected to remain in effect throughout the weekend, with plans to reopen the pier Monday if weather and ocean conditions permit. The beach itself will remain open to visitors, and restaurants, shops and other businesses at the beach will continue normal operations during the temporary closure.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue lifeguards advised people to stay out of the ocean this weekend and encouraged choosing a guarded beach and following lifeguard instructions. Officials also urged caution near the shoreline as elevated surf conditions continue to affect the area. The city said it will provide updates if conditions change or if the reopening schedule is adjusted.

PBCFR crews used the poor conditions as an opportunity to train for operations in heavy surf and challenging currents. During training, the personal rescue watercraft unit worked with a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter to exercise rescues in the elevated surf.

At this time the pier remains closed and will reopen only when officials determine weather and ocean conditions have improved. The city and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue are the agencies documenting the closure, safety guidance and the surf-response training activity.
