King tides push seawater into Lantana parking areas, coastal spots in Palm Beach County

A king tide forced seawater into portions of the Kona Bay Cafe parking lot in Lantana and produced ponding on nearby low-lying streets in Palm Beach County. The National Weather Service warned that king tides could bring moderate coastal flooding to portions of the Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade coastlines during high tide.

According to eyewitness accounts and local reporting, water reached parts of a waterfront restaurant parking area in Lantana; by late afternoon Monday the water had cleared from that lot. Ponding in Lantana was described as modest compared with flooding reported farther south, where video showed water running down roads and streets also flooded in parts of Broward County. In West Palm Beach, water reached parts of Flagler Drive.

Agencies and weather authorities described the event as a seasonal king tide — an exceptionally high tide that occurs when the gravitational forces of the sun and moon reinforce each other around a full or new moon, elevating high-tide levels. The National Weather Service and local meteorologists advised that water can reach low-lying streets and parking lots even without rainfall and cautioned people not to walk or drive through flooded roads.

At this time the documented impacts are limited to temporary ponding in coastal parking areas and low-lying streets; agency warnings remained focused on public safety during high tides rather than sustained property damage.
