Grand jury to consider evidence-tampering charge tied to Lexington July 4 death

Lexington/Fayette County, Kentucky — A Fayette County grand jury will determine whether a criminal case for evidence tampering in the probe of a Lexington teenager’s July 4 death should proceed, after the defendant waived a preliminary hearing on Fayette District Court.

The preliminary hearing would have been the forum for prosecutors to present testimony and evidence before a judge. Police say officers responded to a home on Blue Bonnet Drive at about 2:36 a.m. on July 4 and found an 18-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound; the teenager was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

No criminal charges have been filed in connection with the death itself. The single charge currently filed is tampering with physical evidence, and that allegation is what was sent forward to the grand jury following the waiver.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
