Governor signs execution warrant for man convicted in 1976 North Miami Beach kll
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a warrant Friday scheduling the execution of William Lee Thompson, 74, for a 1976 murder, kidnapping and sexual assault in North Miami Beach. Thompson is set to die by lethal injection at Florida State Prison in Starke with an execution window from noon Oct. 13 to noon Oct. 20. This is the third death warrant Thompson has received; the warrant was signed a day after another inmate’s execution and is the 17th DeSantis has signed this year, two short of the modern-era state record. Advocates with Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty launched a petition opposing the execution, saying Thompson is intellectually disabled and noting the jury’s 7-5 vote for death. All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
