Fort Myers moped driver arrested after FHP pursuit; stolen handgun found on nearby golf course

Florida Highway Patrol troopers say they arrested a man in Fort Myers after a nighttime pursuit that began on SR-82 and ended when a moped and a handgun were found abandoned on a nearby golf course. Troopers reported observing the moped eastbound near Ford Street at about 10:03 p.m., noting the vehicle was traveling 59 mph in a 40 mph zone.

According to FHP, troopers attempted to stop the moped near Ortiz Avenue but the driver accelerated to 65 mph, split into traffic, ran a red light and a stop sign, and continued into a residential area off West End Court. Troopers located the abandoned moped and, nearby on the golf course, what was determined to be a stolen Ruger handgun.

FHP located and arrested the driver, identified in the agency report as Gregory Michael Griffin. The agency alleges multiple offenses; Griffin faces charges that include fleeing to elude, habitual traffic offender, possession of a stolen gun, possession of a firearm during a felony, three Lee County felony warrants, reckless driving, driving under the influence, refusal to submit to DUI testing, possession of drug paraphernalia, and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

The account and the list of charges are those documented by the Florida Highway Patrol. The moped, the firearm allegation, and the arrest were reported by FHP; court actions or case outcomes were not included in the agency report provided here.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
