Former Miami‑Dade coach and corrections officer arrested on sexual assault charge tied to 2012 school incident

A former Miami‑Dade high school football coach, who later worked for the county’s Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, was arrested Friday and is accused of sexually assaulting a student in 2012. An arrest warrant from the Miami‑Dade Sheriff’s Office says the incidents began in August 2012 at American Senior High School in the County Club area when the victim, then 17, was working in the athletic office under the coach’s supervision; the warrant alleges he turned off the light, picked her up, kissed her, pinned her against a wall and then assaulted her. Deputies say the warrant alleges the two later had consensual intercourse three additional times at the school before she turned 18, and then continued a relationship after she became an adult while she was still attending high school. The 46‑year‑old defendant faces a first‑degree felony charge of sexual assault by a person in a position of familial or custodial authority and could face life in prison; the case will proceed through the criminal court system. All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
