Former Dallas officer Amber Guyger granted parole in case from 2018

A parole board granted early release to former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger in Dallas on October 1, 2026. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles approved parole after reviewing her institutional record and program participation.
Guyger had been convicted in the September 2018 fatal shooting of her neighbor, 26-year-old Botham Jean, and was sentenced in October 2019 to 10 years in prison. Her first parole bid in 2024 was denied.
The Dallas Police Department stated it had no role in the parole decision. Civil litigation later found Guyger liable for Jean’s death and ordered $98.6M in damages to his family.
The board did not set a release timeline; the decision record cited lack of a documented pattern of violent arrests and satisfactory institutional adjustment.
