Former Dallas officer Amber Guyger granted parole after serving seven years

A Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles decision affected Dallas County when it granted parole to former Dallas Police officer Amber Guyger, who was serving a sentence in connection with the 2018 death of Botham Jean in his Dallas apartment. Guyger had been found guilty on Oct. 1, 2019, and was serving a 10 year sentence.
The board cited the offender's institutional record, participation in treatment and lack of a documented pattern of violent convictions in its approval. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice did not provide an official release date.
The Dallas Police Department noted the parole decision was made by the board and was outside the department's authority. The Jean family filed a civil suit in March 2026 seeking nearly $100 million related to the case; the criminal conviction and the board's parole action are separate legal matters.
