Former 21 Air pilots say they raised safety concerns before Miami crash
Two former pilots for 21 Air told federal labor proceedings they had raised safety complaints about the cargo carrier before the jet crash at Miami International Airport Sunday. In sworn statements, pilot Karl Seuring and attorney Mike Anello said Seuring alleged the company did not give pilots sufficient rest between flights and used unusually long checklists; Anello told a judge the checklist increased the likelihood of an accident. Seuring filed a complaint with OSHA and lost at a hearing; a trial was held in 2023 and a judge’s ruling is pending. Another retired pilot, Don Helmig, wrote to majority owner Jim Crane about recurring issues. 21 Air, founded in 2014 in North Carolina, said it is “devastated” by the accident and is cooperating fully with the NTSB, FAA and local authorities.
