Federal watchdog finds overcrowding, food-safety and medical staffing issues at Krome detention center

A Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General unannounced inspection in May 2025 found significant overcrowding and multiple deficiencies at the Krome North Service Processing Center in southwest Miami-Dade. Inspectors reported the facility held 1,102 detainees on the first day of the visit despite a maximum capacity of 882, and identified intake holding rooms and housing units exceeding posted capacities, detainees held in intake areas longer than the 12-hour standard, and some sleeping on temporary cots. The report also documented food safety violations, medical staffing shortages, and other operational and safety concerns, and recommended corrective action in nine areas. Local reports and protests in June 2025 had raised similar concerns; the report’s findings outline problems that federal authorities flagged for remediation.
