Family questions Broward Sheriff’s Office K-9 bite during Pompano Beach arrest
Broward County, Florida — A 36-year-old man was bitten by a Broward Sheriff’s Office K-9 during an arrest in Pompano Beach, according to relatives and a cellphone video of the encounter.
The video shows the K-9 biting the man’s ankle as deputies directed him to get on his stomach. Relatives and a nearby witness gave a timeline consistent with the arrest: the man approached the witness near northwest 12th Court and Second Avenue asking about a toolbox; the witness declined and shortly afterward BSO deputies arrived.
An arrest form reviewed by authorities indicates deputies responded after a resident called 911 and alleged the man had a toolbox and then threatened the resident with a box cutter. BSO provided a statement describing its general practice when K-9s are used: suspects receive medical treatment, and use-of-force incidents are reported to supervisors and documented for administrative review.
Family members say the man suffers from mental health issues and that watching the video was distressing; they questioned the necessity of the force used. Allegations documented in the arrest paperwork include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, armed burglary and resisting arrest.
Current status: the man faces those charges; the source notes the department’s internal documentation and medical-treatment procedures but does not report outcomes of any investigation or of criminal proceedings.
