Drunk Driving Crash Results in Death, Man Faces Jail

A 67-year-old man accused of driving under the influence (DUI) was denied bond and ordered to remain in jail by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer. The man crashed his Cadillac into a home in Coral Gables, Florida, on June 24, 2023, striking 82-year-old Henri Bezy who was sleeping inside. Bezy was pronounced dead at the scene. The arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office stated that Matis, who was driving a car, ran a stop sign and crashed into the home. Toxicology results showed Matis had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.245% to 0.29%, more than three times the legal limit. Prosecutors argued for Matis to remain in custody. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. and investigators noted Matis accelerated to 43 mph without applying the brakes prior to the crash. All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
