Deerfield Beach employee arrested after shop discovers missing high-value trading cards
Broward County, Florida — A Deerfield Beach employee was arrested on a grand theft charge after staff at a local trading-card shop discovered multiple missing high-value cards, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
The incident centered on a sold NBA rookie card that could not be located after a customer had paid for expedited shipping. Shop employees reviewed surveillance and identified a co-worker as the last person seen handling the sold card.
Deputies say the employee, identified by investigators as Maximo Viani Otoni, 22, of Coconut Creek, admitted during a phone call to taking that card; staff later recovered it from his mailbox, the agency reported. Investigators allege Otoni told them he possessed several other cards.
Deputies say he admitted to having three additional cards initially identified at the scene — two Lionel Messi cards and a Neymar–Cristiano Ronaldo autographed card — and later admitted to six more at his home, including another Cooper Flagg card, an autographed Caitlin Clark card and a Dirk Nowitzki card. BSO estimated the ten cards taken were valued at up to $17,220.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office arrested Otoni and booked him into the BSO Main Jail on a grand theft charge. As of the most recent agency report, he remained in custody with no listed bond.
Allegations described here are those reported by BSO and reflect the status documented by investigators.
