A late‑night crash on Interstate 79 south in Kanawha County left one driver dead after a pickup left the travel lane and struck a parked dump truck in a work zone. The collision occurred at 11:38 p.m.; the driver of the Chevy Silverado was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The disabled pickup then reentered traffic and was hit by a southbound passenger car. Both people in that car declined medical treatment.

Southbound lanes were closed and traffic detoured for about five hours; they reopened around 6:15 a.m. The West Virginia State Police and county deputies continue investigating while a DOH contractor replaces nearby bridge decks.
