Charlotte police rule Sept. 5 deadly shooting on Mereview Court justified

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a fatal shooting at an apartment complex on Mereview Court near Quail Hollow on Sept. 5 resulted in the death of a 31-year-old man and has been ruled justifiable. The agency reported the incident occurred at about 3 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, and identified the deceased as 31-year-old Elliot Butler. Police said the victim was shot to death at the scene.
Authorities described the sequence as clear early in the inquiry; police said “It was immediately clear how the shooting happened or who the alleged shooter was.” Following the department’s review, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police classified the death as a justified homicide on Thursday, Sept. 24.
The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office subsequently declined to file criminal charges in the matter. The DA’s decision and the department’s ruling mean no suspect was charged in connection with the Sept. 5 shooting, according to the agencies’ statements reported by local authorities.
At this time the official position from investigators is that the shooting was justified and no prosecution will follow, as documented by the police ruling and the DA’s declination. No further case developments were detailed in the report.
