Carjacking, multi-jurisdiction pursuit ends in NW Miami-Dade arrest after hospital escape
A man accused of stealing a vehicle from an elderly patient after escaping a hospital sparked a more-than-20-minute police pursuit through Northwest Miami-Dade, ending in an arrest after a PIT maneuver. According to police accounts, the sequence began early Thursday afternoon after officers had taken the suspect to Palmetto General Hospital under the Baker Act. A police report and union statements allege the 35-year-old escaped the hospital wearing scrubs, confronted and threw an elderly woman to the ground and stole her car. The vehicle then eluded officers for more than 20 minutes, reportedly driving in circles, traveling down side streets, evading three PIT attempts, striking multiple vehicles and running at least one red light before officers used a PIT that led to an arrest at N.W. 17th Ave. and 79th St. The suspect, identified by police as Jordan Brown, faces multiple charges listed by law enforcement: burglary with assault or battery, robbery and carjacking, battery on a person 65 years or older, fleeing and eluding police, aggravated assault, resisting an officer without violence, leaving the scene of an accident, and reckless driving. The South Florida Police Benevolent Association president described the episode as dangerous for pedestrians and officers. Court records show Brown appeared before a Miami-Dade Circuit Court judge, who found probable cause, appointed a public defender and ordered him held without bond. He is scheduled for another hearing Monday to address pre-trial detention. The allegations above are drawn from the police report, union statements and the court filing; criminal charges are pending and subject to prosecution. All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
