Cargo Boeing 767 overruns MIA runway; five dead, several hospitalized

A Boeing 767 cargo jet overran the northwest end of Miami International Airport’s diagonal runway around 2 p.m. Sunday after arriving from San Juan, authorities said. Firefighters worked to extinguish visible black smoke as the aircraft came to rest, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported the plane struck several vehicles nearby. Five people were kll and five others were hospitalized, three of them in critical condition, Miami-Dade officials said. Airport operations were halted with a ground stop and all runways closed; one runway reopened about 4:15 p.m. and a second about 30 minutes later, and no departures were permitted through at least 5:30 p.m. as investigations and recovery continued.
