Animal Care Officers Remove 74 Rabbits and Fowl From Lexington Home

Lexington/Fayette County, Kentucky — Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control officers seized 74 animals, primarily rabbits and fowl, from a residence on Fair Oaks Drive in Lexington after responding to a complaint.

Agency personnel allege many of the animals were found without food or water and in unsanitary conditions; several animals showed signs of medical issues and are being evaluated by the agency’s medical team. Officers say the follow-up visit occurred Thursday night and resulted in removal of the animals to the agency’s facility.

Because of the large number of animals, shelter staff spent several hours creating additional holding areas and arranging care to ensure safe housing and treatment. Agency photographs released were taken at the facility after removal and do not depict the conditions at the residence.

The agency has charged the property owner, identified by Animal Care & Control as Maria Quiroz, with 67 counts of improper care and treatment of animals.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
