Alleged Hialeah escapee carjacks vehicle, sparks multi-agency pursuit into Northwest Miami-Dade
An alleged carjacking and lengthy vehicle pursuit ended in Northwest Miami-Dade after troopers and multiple officers stopped the stolen vehicle, authorities say. Hialeah Police reported that a 35-year-old man who had been undergoing a mental health evaluation at Palmetto General Hospital left the facility, then allegedly carjacked a woman before fleeing. According to Hialeah Police, the woman was not injured. The stolen vehicle drove through Hialeah and into Northwest Miami-Dade while troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol and officers from other agencies pursued. Video obtained by news organizations shows repeated attempts to immobilize the car, including several precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuvers; officers ultimately used a fifth PIT to end the pursuit near Northwest 79th Street and 17th Avenue. Troopers reportedly approached the stopped vehicle with weapons drawn and removed the driver after the crash; FHP troopers are documented as participating in the takedown. Damage to other parked vehicles and a knocked-down handicap sign were observed during the chase as the suspect attempted to evade capture. The individual identified by Hialeah Police was taken to the Miami-Dade Pretrial Detention Center and remained in custody as of late Wednesday night, facing multiple charges. Allegations reported by the agency are those that have been made to police; charging decisions and legal outcomes remain matters for prosecutors and the courts. All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
