85-foot drilling rig collapses onto Brickell Bay Drive, four sustain non-life-threatening injuries
Just after 8 a.m. Monday, an 85-foot drilling rig collapsed onto Brickell Bay Drive at Southeast 12th Street, crushing three vehicles and a construction container and trapping workers, Miami Fire-Rescue officials said. The Miami Technical Rescue Team launched a complex rescue, using hydraulic cutting tools to reach two workers trapped in crushed metal while crews also extinguished a fire that ignited in a struck SUV. Four people avoided serious injuries; the rig operator was hurt after jumping from the collapsing rig and other occupants, including a female driver who reversed out of a collapsing vehicle, escaped. Fire crews completed searches of the affected vehicles, secured the scene and continued on-scene operations to clear debris and assess damage.
