Chicago police charged a 48-year-old woman with first-degree murder after a chld was fatally stabbed on a South Side street, authorities said. The alleged attack occurred on the sidewalk in the South Cottage Grove Avenue; officers and witnesses reported the suspect stabbed the chld multiple times and bystanders pursued and subdued the woman. Emergency responders took the chld to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to the Chicago Police Department.
Police said officers found two knives in the suspect’s purse and a third blade believed to be the murder weapon between the attack site and where the woman was rendered unconscious, per a preliminary CPD report. Witnesses and police reported that one man knocked the suspect unconscious, allowing officers to take her into custody; CPD said the suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the crowd’s intervention.
Court records show the defendant has prior convictions and an active felony warrant dating to February 2025 for failing to appear in a probation matter, and she was scheduled for a detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse, the records and CPD noted. New criminal charges were filed against the defendant; allegations and prior case outcomes are drawn from CPD statements and court files.
All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
