Wauwatosa mailbox theft leads to probation for Milwaukee man

A Milwaukee man was sentenced to probation after Wauwatosa police arrested him in a case involving repeated thefts from a Wauwatosa mailbox. Authorities say the arrest followed surveillance near a mailbox that had been targeted multiple times, and investigators recovered stolen mail and a U.S. Postal Service master key from the suspect’s vehicle.
According to the court complaint and police, the defendant was detained last April after Wauwatosa police conducted surveillance near the repeatedly targeted mailbox. Investigators allege they found a USPS master “arrow” key and stolen correspondence in the man’s car. Police say the suspect admitted searching the stolen mail for checks, photographing those checks and sending the images to a person identified in the investigation as “Oxy” in Florida. Investigators estimated the face value of the stolen checks exceeded $100,000.
The case was pursued by Wauwatosa police with assistance from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The defendant was initially charged with five felony counts; he later entered a plea agreement in which three charges were dismissed but read in at sentencing so the judge could consider them. One count resulted in a money laundering conviction for which the sentence was time served.
For conspiracy to commit forgery the defendant received an 18-month prison term and an additional 18 months of extended supervision; that prison sentence was stayed and the overall sentence was ordered as three years of probation. Those outcomes reflect the court’s resolution as documented in the criminal complaint and sentencing filings.
