Two people died when car struck by Amtrak train at Mobile crossing
A car was struck by an Amtrak train at the railroad crossing near Bellingrath Road and Peary Road in Mobile on Sept. 24 just before 11 a.m., death two people, Mobile Police reported. The crash left roughly half of a vehicle alongside the track and debris scattered in the area; investigators said another portion of the car was carried down the track.
Mobile Police said the Amtrak train was headed to Mobile when it struck the vehicle and that the crossing arms were down at the time of the collision. Officers and investigators remained on scene examining the wreckage and documenting debris patterns as part of the agency’s investigation into the incident.
Local clergy and community members who arrived after the crash reported recognizing the vehicle and the occupants; police later confirmed the two people inside died. Media outlets also reported that attempts to contact the passenger rail operator for comment had not been returned by the time of reporting.
Mobile Police noted this is the second fatal collision at the Bellingrath/Peary intersection in less than a year, and investigators continue to collect evidence and assess causation. The agency has identified the deceased but has asked that family privacy be respected; no criminal charges or contributing mechanical causes have been publicly documented as of the latest police update.
