Two brothers sentenced after deadly December 2024 shooting outside Jackson gas station

Two brothers were sentenced to 25 years each after pleading guilty in the fatal shooting of a man outside a Jackson gas station. The incident occurred on Dec. 9, 2024, when investigators say gunfire erupted from a black Ford Flex at the Jubilee gas station on West Northside Drive. Store surveillance reportedly shows a passenger exiting the SUV and continuing to fire toward the business, striking and death the victim named in filings.
Hinds County District Attorney Brad McCullouch announced the pleas and sentences. Detectives used Flock license plate recognition cameras to track the Ford Flex and contacted the registered owner, who told investigators that her son was driving the vehicle that night. Prosecutors charged 18-year-old Jermaine Benfield and 21-year-old Jeremares Bracey with manslaughter and shooting into a vehicle.
Each defendant was given 20 years to serve for manslaughter and an additional five years for shooting into a vehicle; a judge ordered the terms to run consecutively, producing a total of 25 years to serve for each brother. The State’s prosecution was handled by Brianna Keeler and Seqouia Smith. The reported facts include surveillance evidence, license-plate tracking, an ownership confirmation by the vehicle’s registered owner, guilty pleas by the defendants, and the judicially imposed sentences.
