Memphis police say two people were arrested after a man reported being forced to strip, shot in the leg and beaten until several teeth were knocked out. The victim told investigators he had been picked up by a man he knew as “Jay Pointer” and taken to a home near Pope Street and Omar Robinson Street, where the alleged assault occurred.

According to Memphis Police Department records, the incident was reported on Sept. 23. Investigators say the shooter, later identified as Joseph Polk, produced a handgun and shot the victim through the right thigh during an argument over a prior vehicle purchase. Two other men then allegedly punched the victim in the head, resulting in the dental injuries.

Police arrested Polk and Bailey Jobin. Jobin faces a charge of especially aggravated robbery. Polk was charged with especially aggravated robbery, employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, being a felon in possession of a firearm, theft of property ($2,500–$10,000, motor vehicle), evading arrest and driving without a license. Investigators interviewed the victim at Baptist East Hospital, where he identified those responsible.

MPD officers tracked Polk later the same day to a black 2013 BMW reported stolen. Officers attempted a traffic stop; the driver allegedly evaded and the vehicle was later observed parked near Watkins and Jackson Avenue. Polk was located, frisked, and identified; he was transported for questioning but deemed too impaired by intoxicants to provide a statement. Court appearances for both suspects were scheduled for Sept. 25, and bond information had not been posted at the time of the report.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
