A 21-year-old man was arrested after witnesses said he removed a manhole cover, sat in the opening near Fiserv Forum and then attacked a shuttle driver on W. Juneau Avenue in Milwaukee. The assault was reported at about 10:14 p.m. on Sept. 13, and the victim — identified by the bar owner as one of his shuttle drivers — was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Witnesses and the bar owner told investigators the suspect first approached a shuttle, began yelling and threatening a driver; when a co-worker intervened the 21-year-old allegedly knocked him unconscious. Responding officers who observed the confrontation took the man into custody at the scene and he was transported to a hospital for medical clearance, Milwaukee police said.

While at the hospital, Milwaukee police say the suspect assaulted the officer who had transported him; that officer was treated and released. Charges are pending and the suspect remains in custody, according to police. The bar owner said his driver spent multiple hours in the hospital and is still experiencing pain and bruising; another employee who witnessed the incident described seeing the attack unfold.

Agency action documented so far includes a custody arrest at the scene, hospital transport for clearance, treatment of an injured driver and treatment and release of the officer who was assaulted. Prosecutors have not yet filed formal charges, and police described the case as active and under investigation.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
