Sanford street memorial targeted in mass shooting; two BMWs seized

Sanford police say a mass shooting wounded eight people during a street memorial in Sanford. Officers responded just before 10 p.m. to the area of Poplar Avenue and West 10th Street, where a group had gathered in the street for a celebration of life for an 18-year-old.
According to a redacted police report, witnesses told officers multiple people exited a vehicle and opened fire; at least one person was reported to have carried what was described as a “long gun.” Police arrived within minutes and secured the scene. Of the eight victims, five were treated and released; three remain hospitalized — two in critical condition and one in stable condition.
Sanford investigators say they have taken two BMW 530i sedans — one black and one white, newer models — into custody in connection with the shooting. Police asked attendees to review any photos or video they captured of the vehicles in the area before the incident and to provide that media to investigators. No arrests have been reported and the motive remains unknown.
The Sanford Police Department and Crimeline are seeking tips; investigators requested that anyone with information contact Sanford police or Crimeline. The department is handling evidence and identification efforts as the investigation continues.
