Partner Files Suit After Minneapolis ICE Agent Shot Kills Woman; Family Seeks Accountability

A Minneapolis resident, Renee Good, was fatally shot by an ICE agent on Jan. 7, and her partner has publicly accused federal agents of misconduct and is suing over the death. Becca Good, the victim’s partner, spoke Thursday for the first time since the shooting and announced two civil lawsuits naming the United States government, ICE agents and senior federal officials.
According to the complaint and Becca’s public remarks, she was standing a few feet from their vehicle when an ICE officer fired three shots into it, death Renee. The lawsuit alleges that officers then failed to render aid and prevented a bystander who identified as a physician from providing medical help. Those allegations are presented in the court filing and attributed to Becca and the complaint.
Becca’s filings seek damages for emotional and physical injuries she says resulted from the Jan. 7 shooting; the complaint also states she has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and insomnia and that she suffered a loss of privacy related to national attention. She said she and family members are suing to hold federal actors accountable for their roles in the fatal encounter.
The family described community support in south Minneapolis after the incident and said safety concerns forced Becca from her home for over a month, per the complaints. The lawsuits are the current documented step in the matter; the body of allegations and the identity of defendants come from the court filings and Becca’s public statements.
