A mass shooting in northwest Charlotte left a 4-year-old dead and prompted multiple arrests after 84 rounds struck homes and vehicles in the neighborhood, authorities say. The shooting occurred on Grassy Patch Lane on Sept. 20 and left a woman with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to the investigating agency.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police investigators say the incident began as heavy gunfire that struck several residences. Officers responded to the scene and, in the weeks since, have arrested five people they say are connected to the incident. Prosecutors allege the attack involved multiple shooters and was carried out in retaliation for an earlier shooting that targeted one suspect’s home.

Authorities report the arrested group includes four teenagers and one 22-year-old. Local prosecutors have charged suspects with offenses that include murder and attempted murder; the four juveniles were denied bond in court, and the 22-year-old was ordered held on a $2 million secured bond on an accessory charge, per court records noted by law enforcement.

What law enforcement has presented as allegations—number of shooters and the motive—remains under prosecution. Investigators say additional arrests are being sought as the case continues. The matter is active in the criminal justice system, with suspects in custody while prosecutors and police pursue outstanding leads and charges.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
