Middle-school classroom evacuated in North Platte after nonvenomous snake found

Students and staff were evacuated from a middle-grades classroom in North Platte this week after school personnel discovered a snake inside the room. According to a message shared by Ogallala Public Schools on Facebook, the animal was identified as nonvenomous and school staff removed the reptile from the building without incident.
Officials say students were promptly moved out of the classroom during the discovery; no injuries were reported. District maintenance personnel began inspecting the classroom and the wider facility to determine potential entry points and to secure them against future occurrences.
The school credited the calm, quick response of staff and students in handling the situation. The posted district message emphasized that student safety is the top priority and described the sequence of actions taken: evacuation, safe removal of the snake by staff, and follow-up inspection by maintenance.
At this time the matter is documented by the district’s communication to families and the subsequent maintenance inspection; no criminal or regulatory actions were reported in that messaging. The incident was reported publicly on Sept. 30, 2026, in a summary of the district’s account of events.
