A house fire in Geneva that died at least 15 dogs left one survivor receiving round-the-clock veterinary care and a suspect in Seminole County custody. The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office says the blaze was intentionally set; the suspect remains jailed and facing multiple animal-cruelty counts and an arson charge.

Veterinary staff in Casselberry treated the surviving dog, nicknamed Rudy by clinic workers, for burns to his face and body and for smoke inhalation and thermal injury to his lungs. Clinic personnel reported singed hair and concerns about corneal damage; Rudy was transferred from the county shelter to the Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Central Florida in Casselberry for continuous monitoring.

Agency statements and shelter records indicate at least two other surviving dogs: one remains at large and another female is receiving care at the county shelter. The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office has characterized the fire as intentionally set; those allegations are reflected in the charges filed against the jailed suspect but are the agency’s account.

Current case status: the suspect is in the Seminole County jail facing multiple counts of aggravated animal cruelty and one count of arson, and Rudy remains under veterinary care with an anticipated return to Animal Services reported for next week by clinic staff.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
