Man found dead after apparent overnight shooting in Grand Crossing alley
County Crime Watch • Chicago, Cook County, Illinois

Chicago police and city records show a 23-year-old man was shot in Grand Crossing on October 1 and found more than 10 hours later. City data lists the shooting at about 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 1; police say the victim was discovered unresponsive in an alley behind East 72nd Place at about 6:55 a.m. on Friday, October 2, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The records do not provide an arrest or suspect description.

CWB Chicago’s review of city databases identified the case as one of dozens in areas formerly monitored by the ShotSpotter gunfire-detection network. The outlet reports that the city’s automated alerts would previously have triangulated suspected gunfire even when no 911 call was made; Chicago ended its ShotSpotter contract in 2024. Police dispatch audio cited by the reporting indicates no 911 calls were received about shots fired near the location around the time the victim was located.

CWB Chicago said it has identified 95 similar cases in previously covered areas where victims experienced lengthy waits for emergency response. The reporting and city records form the basis of the documented timeline; no criminal charges are listed in the records excerpted by CWB Chicago.

All individuals accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
